Hampden County 4-H Show

After about a 6 week break since our last show, show season is revving back up, starting with Hampden County 4-H Show near Springfield on the very grounds where the Big E will be held in a few short months. Last show we were not as prepared as we were this time, although this time we were not as prepared as last time. Allow me to explain.. Last time, we were flying somewhat solo. We had once before at the Topsfield Fair 2015, but it was a one-day show. We trucked in, showed and left. We were lacking several things; shavings, wheelbarrow, shovel, I can hardly remember, but the bottom line is this was a tough lesson to realize we needed to have a tangible checklist of ALL the items we need to make our shows go off without a hitch. Well the previous show we had to Hampden was The Big East, at this show we remembered most of our things, but we still forgot some items. Thankfully my husband was able to run back home and pick up a few of the items we were missing, i.e. a push broom, a water hose, and a few other odds and ends. We had some DRAMA from some of our neighbors. Our shovel “walked off” more than once and we were constantly tracking down our items. We had a neighbor that requested the use of our wheelbarrow saying he would help dump. He sure filled it and made a huge mess in OUR area and didn’t dump it ONCE. That’s another story though, but a lesson to other 4-Hers out there. Sharing is nice, and being thoughtful is better, if you borrow someone’s items be sure to TAKE CARE OF IT and RETURN it in BETTER condition than you found it. Being neighborly is excellent, but what’s better is to be as self-reliant as possible. Isn’t that the point, we are all trying to learn that big “R” Word… RESPONSIBILITY…. oh and that other “R” word… R-E-S-P-E-C-T … for other’s property. Ok rant over. πŸ™‚

So back to the story… so at The Big East we added to our “tangible checklist,” so we would not end up in this predicament. We also determined that someone would HAVE to stay in our area AT-ALL-TIMES. It was the only best way to be certain our things would not “walk off.” Again, sharing items is not the issue, we just prefer people would ask so we can keep our inventory in check, we certainly have borrowed a few items ourselves (so thankful!!). We should leave the show with what we brought plus our ribbons/earnings. πŸ™‚ End of story…

So our efforts proved great this time, and we added our set-up decorations to our entourage. We did some brainstorming and came up with a sign. I have since learned that while it was “fun and cute” it may have not been the best display as far as the pertinent info needed. So I made the sign with the idea in mind that we could change it as needed. The black sign “lights up” which is fun (see lights in the set up pic, scroll down) and is a chalk board which sounds great, but in practiceΒ  it did not show up enough to be helpful which is why we opted to do a “fabric cow” and put the breed and stats around the cow. The only problem is that from where the public walks through you really could not read the stats very well. So for next time, I have a plan to correct this problem. You will have to remember to check back to see our updated sign at our next show in 2 weeks!! πŸ™‚ I have already picked up the amendments which involves magnets and PAINT! πŸ™‚ Fun Fun!

Impressive, a.k.a. “Evie’s” sign

Finding the right backdrop was a chore, especially when you wait until the last minute ::blush:: and Walmart is the only choice. You see, normally we are not this ill-prepared, but while we were all signed up and knew a show was coming up, we overlooked the fact that it was 3 days from when we needed to be there! YIKES! Good thing I’ve had some experience with quilting and crafts and such so we switched into high gear and I ran up some cute curtains as our back drop, threw this sign together with a discount sign from Michael’s and vuala… there you have it… our finished result:

With the lights switched on ❀ πŸ™‚

Our roles are at the shows are as follows:

Roles at show
As time goes on we are becoming more defined in our roles. So far so good as of this last show. I felt very together, once we got ourselves together πŸ˜€ .

So the end result, I’ll let the pictures do the talking:

We’re looking forward to our next show in 2 weeks!

That’s all for now, Yah bless …
